I Do Not Want a Room With a View

Some may be wondering why I am taking a triathlon training course.  I hate to bike, run, and swim.  Some would say I actually can’t swim.  And I feel the need to clarify that I’m not training for a triathlon that most think of when you think of triathlons.  I’m training for a beginner triathlon sprint.  It is just a 3 mile run, 12 mile bike ride, and 1000 yard pool swim.  Everything is flat and the only real challenge are cars.  But I’m going from couch to beginner triathlon and I will get a t-shirt.  And let’s be honest, it’s all about the t-shirt.

I’ve decided to do this to get in shape.  Partially because I’m having a midlife crisis and partly because I’m going on a trip with my niece and her cousin and I refuse to be Charlotte Bartlett from “A Room With a View.”  She may have been a cousin and if personalities be known my niece will probably be more of the chaperone than me but she is in her 20’s and I’m, well, not.  So I plan on getting into shape because I’m vain.

I don't plan on being like the cousin, but I DO plan on wearing this outfit.

And being vain during a midlife crisis makes everything that much harder.  I highly recommend not caring at all what you look like if you decide to have a crisis.  It takes less time.

I think the 1000 yard swim would do me in. Thanks for the update, Marianne.

p.s., I think your readers will expect pictures when you don that outfit ;-).

I say… what ever motivates you to get going (healthy wise) is a good thing! What ever it takes, vain or not! I am cheering you on! 🙂

Watch out, however… if you are healthy and all… people will have more expectations from you. And, yes… I am looking forward to pictures of you in that outfit!

  3. I would drown. But go, you! I have been power walking every morning since the start of Lent. It involves getting up at 6 a.m., which is a rather pathetic middle class sacrifice of sorts.

CONGRATS! First off…don’t EVER say, “It is just a 3 mile run, 12 mile bike ride, and 1000 yard pool swim.” It’s a triathlon baby. And maybe to the Ironman types, it’s a ‘just’. But to you and let’s face it, most of the population…it’s HUGE.
The commitment to training for a triathlon of any length is huge but SO rewarding. I started with, “I’ll just do one sprint, just to say I did it.” And….well, I love the feeling of crossing that finish line!

    I’m so excited for you!

  5. Trish Loye Elliott says:

I so get what you’re saying. I seem to becoming more vain as I get older. What’s with that?
As for your triathlon? Go you!!! Don’t downplay it. It’s a real triathlon and you’re going to have to do real training. Be proud. You’ll do great!

Noted….Can I just skip the awkward middle portion and go on to be a kickass old lady?

  7. Beginner Triathlon — never heard of those! That sounds great! (And I’m having my own vain-driven mid-life crisis! 🙂 )

How about if I don the outfit and forget the triathlon? Works for me.
