Run Spot Run

Last Monday, I learned that I don’t actually know how to run correctly.  I stop myself by landing on my heel instead of landing on the ball of my foot.

Here is an exercise for you.  Stand up.  March in place.  (If you are holding your laptop, use both hands.)  Do you feel where you’re landing on your feet?  This is where you should land when you run.

I can do this fine when jogging.  Then Sarah said run at 85%.  I lengthened my stride.  She said, “That is wrong.  Move your legs faster instead.”  I tried.  I failed.  I tried again.  I failed again.  There are 10 people in this class and the instructor was running next to me trying to help me.  She is a wonderful instructor and when I finally got it, she cheered.  And so did part of the class.

That was the part that brought me back to grade school when people try to cheer you on when you just don’t get it and everyone knows you’ll probably never get it but you need to be encourage  for fear you will be scarred for the rest of your life.

I’m that kid in running class.

    You’re not supposed to lengthen your stride?! I had no idea. I’m totally with you on this. I’m not sure if I could do it. (Though I was the kid who came last in the 800 m at the track meet in grade 7… yes, everyone cheered when I finished and yes, this did scar me.)

      Life is much harder after scarring.

  3. Wow. Maybe this is why my knees start hurting every time I get to Week 3 or 4 of running.

    Supposedly running barefoot – or in those weird little rubber slippers with toes – forces you to land on the right part of your foot. I might be too old to try…

  5. I run on my toes – and I know it looks weird. It earned me the nickname twinkletoes as a teen and I’ve never gotten over it!
    Have you read ‘Born to Run’ by Christopher McDougall? It’s a must-read for running people, in my view.

    You make me laugh. But yay you. And no I’m not cheering, I will not be part of the scarring process.

    On an aside…check out GoRun shoes by Schetcers (sp?) Despite the fact that I can’t spell their name, I LOVE these shoes. I own two pairs and I run ‘almost’ exclusively in them. They really help with the forefoot strike.
    Also, the book “Born to Run” Super good.
    You will be awesome at this tri! (Okay, now I’m cheering, a little bit)

    Run, what’s that? Seems I knew something about that years ago, oh well, after listening to your experience I won’t try to remember.

  8. It’s very zen to be the child again who is learning it all anew. My daughter (almost 16) still walks on her toes, all the time. Everyone assumes she’s a dancer but took dance for one year when she was four. It’s possible she’s training for becoming a runner, but more likely (and disappointingly from my perspective), she’s training for walking in high heels.

    Spot is way better than Forrest…You’re in good shape!
